
Inmates over the age of 21 may participate in educational classes as seats are available to work towards the HSE diploma. Classes are held five days a week year-round and students follow their regular High School curriculum or earn a High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma. This program is administered by the Orleans Niagara BOCES in partnership with the Lockport City School District. While being detained here, each inmate is evaluated by the Reception Housing Officer and classified by the Classification Officer. Intake, Transfer & Release - Each inmate once processed, will enter the Reception Housing area where they will be detained until they are classified and health history and physical exam are completed. The new addition will harmonize with the existing building mass, height and color. The new facility is connected to the existing jail on the ground floor and the second level, yet still separates inmate and staff/service functions. The basic housing floor incorporates four separate 56-cell direct supervision housing pods arranged around a unit control center, permitting observation of inmate outdoor recreation activity from two separate security positions, limiting staff requirements and minimizing operational costs. The Jail is a medium-security complex of various housing units. Niagara County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Lockport Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
